Christmas Grill Out

Several Restore Groups will be hosting the last big downtown grill out of 2011. On December 4th from 4pm-6pm several Restore Groups will be gathering downtown at 7th and Neches to eat and fellowship with some of our homeless brothers and sisters, in order share the Christmas spirit with these often forgotten folks.

If you can’t make it to the grill out, but would still like to help out, we need toiletry items for that Sunday:

Deodorant
Toothbrush/toothpaste
Shampoo/conditioner
Soap
Tube Socks

Garage Sale 4 Orphans – Locations

Every 5th Sunday ANC exchanges it’s gathering for a day of serving the Austin area through our non-profit partnerships. Each October, ANC and Restore Communities commits that day to working with Help End Local Poverty (H.E.L.P.) through an effort we call GARAGE SALE for ORPHANS. Join us this year on Sunday, October 30th at one of THREE locations (See below).

Last year we raised enough resources to help finish build out an orphanage in Haiti and drill a well an orphanage and community in Zimbabwe.

This years efforts will focus on breaking cycles of poverty in Haiti by providing homes for single parent families displaced by the earthquake as well as transition homes for aged out orphan girls, one of the most highly targeted group of children by the human trafficking trade.

Mission Peru

Well, the Mission Peru team has been back for about a week, so I wanted to tell you a little bit about the trip. One thing that weighed heavy on me throughout this mission was how honoring it was for our team of 6 to partner with Kairos Ministries in Iquitos, Peru. As a team we met a couple times, prayed for a few months, exchanged emails, did a couple fundraisers, and traveled 30 hours. Yet we walked into 15 years of Pastor Noe and Mercedes Malpartida serving and loving their city. Because of their obedience and sacrifice we were able to do what we did. It has challenged me to think: What am I building today? What am I spending my life on this week?

Three weeks before our arrival the Malpartida family suffered a tremendous loss in Noe’s passing from lung cancer. They lost a husband, a dad…their hero. Our time was marked with several moments of a grieving family. Our team experienced the wake of his influence in Iquitos. How humbling it was to walk into this. We had done so little to be blessed so much. So we lived in the grace of God for 8 days in Iquitos. Here is what happened:

We Launched Welding School: This had been Noe’s vision for years. In five days Scott Dahlstrom, Norman Meyer, Mark Bomar, and Mitch Ingram labored to launch The Kairos Welding School. There is no Home Depot one stop shopping in Iquitos. The first 2 days were spent buying/pricing material and tools to build a security cage for the welding equipment. The final day was spent buying 4 welding machines and all the equipment for their first class. That’s right, last Saturday an instructor, 10 students, and our team had their first welding class. The welding school will continue to function with two purposes: (1) Equip students in the highly demanded trade of welding. (2) Create income for the school by selling metal products. Excellent work team!

Kairos School Sponsorships/Equipping: Only about 15% of the students can afford to pay tuition at the school. About 35% of the students come from Belen, which is the poorest area in Iquitos. We took pictures of and interviewed 40 children. During one of the interviews I asked a sharp nine year old what her favorite Bible verse was and She said, “Psalmos 11” then went on to quote the whole Psalm. We will be working through ANC Kids and Restore San Marcos to sponsor these 40 kids over the next few months. A huge need for teachers at Kairos is a simple yet effective disciplinary plan for each classroom. Mitch Ingram was able to equip 40 Kairos teachers in disciplinary management. After this Mitch was able to take the group of teachers to lunch and answer further questions.

Next Generation Leadership: Noe’s sons, Daniel and Willie Malpartida have taken leadership of the church and school. It was clear that they have strong pastoring gifts and work ethic like their father. The dynamic is different now. Noe was the clear leader but now we have more of a team with Mercedes, Willie, and Daniel. They are currently in the midst of defining roles. Willie will be the lead pastor. He is getting married in January 2012 and will spend 3 weeks in America. Please be in prayer for this team as they continue to grieve loss and take on new roles.

3 Things ANC will continue to do in Peru

Peru Kids: Seek to sponsor 40 kids, $300 a year per student.
Support Kairos Welding School: Ensure instructors are in place and that it is producing income for the school.
Create a Partnership with Not for Sale in Iquitos: Kairos Ministries desires to fight the huge human trafficking issue in their city. Many kids especially young girls are trafficked into the Lima, the capital of Peru. Awareness is a huge need right now.

Serve Austin Sunday: Garage Sale 4 Orphans

The last Serve Austin Sunday (SAS) for 2011 is right around the corner, October 30th. For those who may not know what SAS is, every time there is a fifth Sunday in a month (four times a year), we cancel our worship gathering, and go “be the church” to our city. Meaning, instead of gathering to worship, we serve our city in places of need by partnering with several of our non-profit partners. However, on the last SAS of each year, we partner with HELP to serve outside of our boarder, through what we call, Garage Sale for Orphans.

So, here’s what we need:

We need you to start going through your stuff, and setting aside stuff you don’t need or use anymore (please make sure the stuff is in good condition).
Locate the Garage Sale Closest to you: we have several garage sale locations (see below), depending on the garage sale closest to you, will determine how and when you bring your stuff.
Contact the facilitator of that garage sale using the email address given below next to the location, you will get further instructions specific to that garage sale.
Remember, this is a day of service, we need volunteers to help make these garage sales happen, so when you contact the facilitator of the garage sale, you will also be told how you can help serve at the garage sale.

Peru Kids

October 9 – 21, ANC will be sending 6 people to serve with a school and church in Iquitos, Peru. What excites us most about this mission is that we are partnering with people that are already seeing the Kingdom of God move in great ways. The initiatives we are doing with them are things they want to see moved to the next level so they can better serve their region. We have been asked to join in on their mission to their city. One of the major components in moving this work to the next level rests in the sponsorship of the kids that go to Kairos School.

When Noe and Mercedes Malpartida returned to Iquitos 15 years ago their vision was to plant a church. What they found were children everywhere with nowhere to go. Their plans changed and they started a school with 14 children. The need was education. The good news in this context was providing a safe place for children to come and learn: learn to read and write and to learn about Christ through Biblical teaching. Out of the school the church was planted. 15 years later the school has 900 students and the church has grown to 500. Alan Hirsch recently said, “Don’t plant a church, plant the gospel.” Noe and Mercedes brought the simple good news of getting an education and God has used it to declare the gospel. What an example of reading the culture, exposing and meeting needs, and seeing the Kingdom of God explode.

This Sunday, September 25 in ANC Kids we will launch Peru Kids. Every Sunday morning we will ask ANC Kids (2yrs – 5th grade) to bring offerings to support the children in this school – 85% of the children there can’t afford the school. Many of the kids are from Belen, which is the poorest part of Iquitos. Our initial goal will be to raise $300 a month. This will allow us to support 12 kids this year. We are currently calling this endeavor, Peru Kids and hope to see this expanded into other churches around Central Texas.

Unless you have had your television off for the last 48 hours, then you are aware that right now central Texas is being burned by several uncontrollable fires. We recognize that those that consider ANC their home, are spread out all over the greater Austin area, so for now, we are asking you to respond the best you can according to your locale. East Side Children’s Book Drive

We agree with Helen Exley, when she says, “Books can be dangerous. The best ones should be labeled ‘This could change your life.‘” Many of us have seen the affects of reading in our own lives. The truth is, one of the very keys to end cycles of poverty is not in handouts, rather access to good books and literacy. Most of us are aware that many of our pockets of illiteracy are east of I-35, so this is where we want to go. On Septmeber 16th-17th three of our Restore Groups are partnering with the Austin Habitat for Humanity to give away 1,000 children’s books to over 200 children ranging from ages 3-12 years old. Here’s how you can help:

Help us find books in good condition - they could be from your own library, a local pre-school, from neighbors, or anywhere.
Age Appropriate – Make sure they are readable, age relevant and age appropriate for 3-12 years of age.
Timeline – The book drive is happening on September 16th an 17th, so we need the books by September 9th so we have time to sort them.

Our hope is that this is our first project of many in this specific pocket of town to begin enriching the lives of those living in more impoverished areas of Austin.

Back-To-School Back-pack-Drive

Since the beginning of ANC, we have teamed up with local organizations to do back-pack drives for students who can’t afford the basic necessities required of them to attend school. I’m not sure if you can call something a tradition after only four times, but we would consider this a tradition, since we have participated in this every year of our existence. So, here we are again for the fourth time and we are partnering with our friends at Austin Angels and Caring Family Network to provide backpacks for foster children in need of basic school necessities.

This is back-pack-drive, gone simple. Instead of you or your Restore Group having to go out shopping to make this happen, you can simply shop from the convenience of your home computer. All you have to do is click HERE, and begin your part in the back-pack drive.

As you begin to look through the available packages, keep in mind that the greatest needs are as follows:

Primary: 60 Bundles
Elementary: 65 Bundles
Junior High: 118 Bundles

Hey Restore Communities, Serve Austin Sunday is just around the corner – July 31st. We have several projects left to volunteer for. That being said, whether you are serving at the grillout or not, as a Restore Community you can help us, help the homeless this summer. Instead of each group making so many bags, over the next two weeks we are asking whole Restore Communities to volunteer to pick one of the following products and bring them as a group:

100 toothpaste/brush
100 deodorant
100 travel soaps
100 chapsticks

ANC sending some to Haiti!

Many of you know, that many of our own will be leaving tomorrow morning to spend a week in Haiti with HELP End Local Poverty. We are sending, two of our pastors, Matthew Hansen and Lamar Stockton. Along with them will be Jill Stockton, Jeremiah Keck, Shonna Shelton, and Beverly Shelton.
